On Wednesday, October 22, Brunswick High School hosted its first-ever Girls Flag Football Event, a student-initiated competition that proved to be far more than a traditional powder puff game. Four teams representing each class (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors) spent 2 weeks practicing and preparing, and when game day arrived, they were ready to compete for a championship.
Originally scheduled for the high school, the event was moved to the middle school field due to a scheduling change with the girls soccer team’s playoff game. Despite chilly, rainy weather, fans turned out in force to cheer on the athletes and coaches.
Instead of charging admission, the athletic department collected canned and non-perishable food items for the Brunswick Food Pantry. The donation, delivered on Monday October 27, will help support families in the community as Thanksgiving approaches.
On the field, the competition was fierce:
The Juniors defeated the Freshmen in Game 1.
The Seniors topped the Sophomores in Game 2.
In the Championship Game, the Juniors prevailed over the Seniors to capture the trophy.
A huge thank-you goes out to Coach Yarwood, Coach Carter, Coach Branchick, and Officer Kopacko for braving the cold and rain to officiate throughout the night. Appreciation also goes to Coach Golod, Coach Schwartz, Coach Fink, Coach Kyle, Mr. Merrill, Mr. Gwirtz, Mrs. DiFrancesco, and Mrs. Goessler for supporting the athletes and helping make the evening a success.
The night truly belonged to the players and coaches, though. The unforgettable evening included the freshmen team entering the field to the Ohio State fight song, the senior coaching staff donning headsets to communicate from the sideline to the coaches box, and fast, physical play from all the players throughout the night. This might just become an annual event at BHS!
Go Big Blue!
