Brunswick, Ohio — The Brunswick High School Men’s Soccer Team battled to a 1–1 draw tonight with visiting Jackson in the OHSAA Friday Night Futbol opener. Both teams begin the 2026 campaign at 0-0-1. The result continues the tight historical series between the programs, with Jackson maintaining a narrow edge at 5-4-8 all-time.

Brunswick had the better of play in the first half, controlling possession and tempo while generating several half-chances, but neither side found the breakthrough and the teams entered halftime tied 0-0.

Early in the second half, Brunswick struck first. Senior captain and defender Brayden Oleksiw opened the scoring with 37:05 remaining, finishing a well-worked sequence after senior forward Russ Bickley slipped him through with a precise assist. The goal energized the Blue Devils and pushed momentum firmly in their favor.

Jackson responded with pressure of their own and found the equalizer with 14:51 remaining, when sophomore Dawson Lanzer scored unassisted to level the match at 1-1.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing minutes, but strong defensive play and timely goalkeeping kept the scoreline locked. Brunswick out-shot Jackson 10–6, including a 6–4 advantage in shots on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Artur Vasylkevych, making his first career start, recorded three saves in the draw. Jackson sophomore Andrew Delaney made five saves for the Polar Bears.

Head Coach Ben Dotson reflected on the performance:

“I was pleased with the effort, but the performance was not our best and the boys know we have a lot to learn from tonight. That’s expected in the first match of the season and with some young guys out there. Got to turn the page quickly on move on to Wadsworth.”

Dotson named senior forward Russ Bickley Man of the Match for his impact off the bench, including the assist on the opening goal and his overall influence on the attack.

Brunswick next plays Wadsworth in the traditional I-71 Derby on Tuesday. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM at Art Wright Stadium in Wadsworth.
