Shaker Heights, Ohio -- The Brunswick High School Men’s Soccer Team delivered its most inspired performance of the season Tuesday night, overcoming injuries, a slow start and a another state-ranked opponent to earn a massive 2-1 road victory over Shaker Heights.

The win lifts Brunswick to 4-3-5 overall and 3-1-0 in Greater Cleveland Conference play, giving the Blue Devils nine points in the league table and putting them in a four-way tie atop the GCC. The victory also gives Brunswick a 6-5-1 lead in the all-time series with Shaker Heights.

Shaker Heights, ranked No. 19 in Ohio and No. 5 in Division II, struck first in the seventh minute. Jack Narens produced a moment of brilliance, creating space with a slick piece of footwork before unleashing a driven 25-yard strike into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Brunswick entered halftime frustrated and trailing while battling injuries throughout the lineup. Captain Ryan Dick was unavailable, and multiple in-game knocks and injuries forced the Blue Devils to make constant adjustments.

But the second half belonged to Brunswick.

Just over eight minutes into the second half, with 31:58 showing on the clock, junior Adam Jaber earned a penalty kick. Senior goalkeeper Artur Vasylkevych stepped to the penalty spot and calmly buried the equalizer to make it 1-1.

A little more than eight minutes later, the Blue Devils struck again.

With 23:48 remaining, Alex Zoltowski stole a pass of a Red Raider clearance and sent a brilliant pass to Martin Klenjoski, who finished the opportunity to give Brunswick a 2-1 advantage. The goal came just over 16 minutes into the second half, completing the comeback and flipping the match on its head.

From there, Brunswick’s resolve, organization and collective toughness carried the Blue Devils home.

Sophomore defender Charlie Avarello earned Man of the Match honors, stepping into the center-back role for the injured Dick and delivering a brave, composed and commanding performance that anchored the Brunswick defense.

The statistics reflected the tight nature of the contest. The teams finished even in total shots at 9-9 and corner kicks at 3-3, while Brunswick held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Vasylkevych finished with one save, while Shaker Heights goalkeeper Henry Katz recorded two.

Head Coach Ben Dotson praised his team’s resilience afterward:

“I am amazed at their overcoming of adversity tonight. It has been a rough few weeks, but I’m super proud of the boys for responding to so much adversity and getting a massive three points on the road.”

Brunswick’s victory was only part of a busy night around the Greater Cleveland Conference, with the results creating a logjam at the top of the league. Combined with Brunswick’s comeback victory at Shaker Heights, the results leave Brunswick, Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights and Strongsville all at 3-1 with nine points, creating a four-way tie atop the GCC.

Cleveland Heights improved to 3-1 with nine points following a 5-0 victory over Euclid. Euclid fell to 0-4 and remains on zero points in conference play. Strongsville also moved to 3-1 with nine points following a 20-0 victory over Lorain, which dropped to 1-3 with three points. Mentor defeated Riverside, 6-2, moving Mentor to 2-2 in GCC play with six points, while Riverside dropped to 1-3 with three points.

Brunswick returns to action Tuesday, hosting Strongsville in a crucial GCC showdown in the traditional Pearl Road Derby. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium.
