Cleveland, Ohio -- The Brunswick High School Men’s Soccer Team traveled to Cleveland on Thursday night for a long-awaited matchup against St. Ignatius, the number-one ranked team in Ohio and 24th nationally. The Wildcats, seven-time national champions and 12-time state champions, controlled long stretches of play, but Brunswick responded with unity, discipline, and a heroic defensive effort before falling 1–0 at Wasmer Field. St. Ignatius improves to 6-1-0 on the season, while Brunswick loses their first game of 2026, dropping to 3-1-3.

The match marked the first meeting between the programs since 1993 and 1994, when Brunswick defeated St. Ignatius in back-to-back postseason shootouts. With Thursday’s result, St. Ignatius now leads the historical series 1-0-2.

St. Ignatius generated consistent pressure throughout the night and outshot Brunswick 8–2 in shots on goal, but the Blue Devils defended with organization, bravery, and a collective commitment that kept the match scoreless deep into the second half. The deciding moment came with just 7:11 remaining, when Gray Galauner finished a well-worked sequence assisted by Max Speelman. It was a heartbreaking end to a performance defined by resilience and team-wide effort.

Senior goalkeeper Artur Vasylkevych earned Man of the Match honors for his outstanding display in goal, making seven saves — several of the spectacular variety — to keep Brunswick level for nearly the entire match. His leadership anchored a defensive unit that delivered timely tackles, smart positioning, and unwavering focus against one of the nation’s premier programs.

After the match, Head Coach Ben Dotson praised his team’s character, saying, “That was a Brunswick Blue Devil team tonight. It’s always disappointing to lose to the best program in state history, but our boys stood toe-to-toe with them and were never afraid. That speaks volumes about who they are as people, the pride they play with, and who we represent every time we step on the field. I’m a super proud coach. We need to use this as a learning lesson moving forward as we continue to get better.”

Brunswick now turns its attention to Saturday’s cross-town rivalry match against Buckeye. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium.
