Blue Devils Battle Strongsville to Scoreless Draw in Intense Pearl Road Derby

Brunswick, Ohio -- Brunswick and Strongsville added another hard-fought chapter to the Pearl Road Derby on Tuesday night, battling to an intense 0-0 draw at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium in a match carrying major Greater Cleveland Conference championship implications.

The result moves Brunswick to 4-3-6 overall and 3-1-1 in the GCC, while Strongsville moves to 9-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.

The draw also moves the all-time series to 31-8-10 still in favor of Strongsville.

Strongsville enjoyed the better of the play during the first half, putting Brunswick under pressure without finding a breakthrough.

The Mustangs’ best opportunity came with 1:14 remaining before halftime. Mark Cojocaru redirected a header toward goal, but senior goalkeeper Artur Vasylkevych reacted brilliantly to keep it out and send the teams into halftime scoreless.

The match opened considerably after the break, turning into a much more end-to-end battle.

Brunswick nearly struck in the 52nd minute when senior Logan Evans broke through on goal, only for Strongsville goalkeeper Dominic Koval to produce a fine save.

Ten minutes later, Symeon Kononets tested Vasylkevych with a driven effort from approximately 24 yards, but the Brunswick goalkeeper parried the shot away to preserve the clean sheet.

The Blue Devils nearly produced a dramatic winner with only 54 seconds remaining. Tyler Bradbury unleashed a driven effort from 35 yards that flashed just wide, bringing an agonizing end to Brunswick’s final opportunity of the night.

Vasylkevych finished with six saves, earning his seventh clean sheet of the season, while Koval recorded two saves for Strongsville.

Senior defender and captain Evan Denker earned Man of the Match honors for Brunswick. Sliding into the center-back position, Denker consistently broke up play at important moments while organizing a Blue Devils backline that kept Strongsville’s dangerous attack off the scoreboard.

Elsewhere in the Greater Cleveland Conference, Shaker Heights defeated Mentor, 2-1, Cleveland Heights defeated Lorain, 12-0, and Riverside defeated Euclid, 5-0. Those results leave Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights tied for first place, while Brunswick and Strongsville slip into second following their scoreless draw.

The championship is now out of Brunswick’s hands, but the race is far from over. Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights still have to play each other in the final week of the GCC campaign, guaranteeing that at least one of the two leaders will drop points.

For Brunswick, the formula is simple: take care of its remaining conference business and hope the results elsewhere open the door.

Head coach Ben Dotson was proud of his team’s performance while acknowledging the frustration of coming so close to a victory.

“I’m amazingly proud of the effort from the boys tonight. Strongsville is an outstanding team, and I thought our guys battled for everything. I’m disappointed because I really felt like there was something there for us in the end, but we just couldn’t find that final moment. Obviously, the draw takes the league championship out of our hands, but all we can do now is keep competing, keep pushing and take care of our business the rest of the way.”

Brunswick continues Rivalry Week on Saturday, traveling to Memorial Stadium to face Medina. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
